Flying to Egypt

Main Airports

Cairo International (CAI) is 24km (15 miles) northeast of the city at Heliopolis (journey time – 1 hour). To/from the airport: There are bus services every 30 minutes, and taxis are available. Special limousines are offered by local and international operators. Hotel cars may also be available. Facilities: Incoming and outgoing duty-free shops selling a wide range of goods, car hire, post office, bank/bureau de change, restaurants and bar, hotel reservation service, souvenir shops, bookshop and travel insurance services.

Borg El Arab (HBE) is 60 km (37 miles) southwest of Alexandria. Facilities: Duty-free shop, bank and exchange services, VIP lounge, post office and restaurant.

Luxor Airport (LXR)is 5.5km (3.5 miles) from Luxor. To/from the airport: There is a regular bus service to the city centre (journey time – 15 minutes). Special limousine and local taxi services are available. Facilities:Car hire, bank and exchange services, and a bar and restaurant.

Hurghada Airport (HRG) is located seven miles (12km) south of the city of Hurghada El Dahar. Taxis are available outside the terminal building but rates should be negotiated before entering the taxi. The journey time to Hurghada El Dahar (downtown) is approximately 20 minutes. Travelers can also find transfers from the airport to town by minivan or bus; minibusses are available outside the airport, leaving once full.

Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport (SSH) is located 11 miles (18km) northeast of Sharm el-Sheikh centre, near Ras Nasrani. Regular and tourist taxis are available; travellers can also arrange transfer by shuttle bus through their hotels or travel companies.

New Cairo Capital International Airport (CCE) is an international airport serving the new capital city of Egypt. It is approximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) east of Cairo and just outside the Second Greater Cairo Ring Road halfway to the seaport city of Suez. According to the plans, the city would become the new administrative and financial capital of Egypt, housing the main government departments and ministries, as well as foreign embassies. Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation (EHCAAN) opened the new Capital International Airport on 09-Jul-2019 for a trial period, with commercial operations expected to commence in 2021.

Getting to Egypt by boat

Main ports: Alexandria, Nuweiba, Port Said and Suez.

Daily ferry plies the route between Nuweiba and Taba on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and Aqaba in Jordan. There is an international ferry service along the Nile between Wadi Halfa in Sudan and Egypt’s High Dam, and a car ferry from Jeddah to Suez via the Suez Canal. Many cruise ships stopover in Egypt as a part of their African or European itineraries.

Getting There by Road

The road border between Libya and Egypt is open. There are two border crossings between Palestine, Israel, and Egypt: one runs from Cairo via El Arish to Rafiah on the north Sinai coast; and the other from Cairo via Suez and Taba to Eilat. Daily coaches leave early in the morning from Tel Aviv in Israel and Jerusalem in Palestine for travel via El Arish/Rafiah to Cairo and vice versa.
